A city in the Vologda Oblast in the northwest of the Russian Federation. It is located on the left bank of the Sukhona River where it joins the Yuk River. Population: 36,200 (1992). It developed around the Mikhail Arkhangelsky Monastery, which was founded in the early 13th century. In the 16th and 17th centuries it was a major commercial centre, trading in grain, seafood and salt. In the 17th century it was a centre for the production of icons.
