The capital of the Dordogne department in southwestern France. It is located on the Ile River, a tributary of the Dordogne River. It has a population of 30,193 (1999). It is the central city of the Périgord region, the seat of the bishopric, and the commercial center. Vegetables and livestock are traded here. Industries include food products such as foie gras paste and truffles (Périgord de Truffles), tobacco, leather, and chemicals. The city center is made up of two districts. The Cité in the west was Vesona in Roman times, and was the capital of the Gallic Petrocoris. The Puy-Saint-Front in the east was a town established near a monastery between the 5th and 9th centuries, and Périgueux was formed by the merger of the two. There are many historical buildings, such as a 3rd century Roman amphitheatre, the 12th century Romano-Byzantine-style Cathedral of Saint-Front (restored 1852-1901), the 12th century Church of Saint-Etienne, and the 16th century Chapel of Saint-Juan.
