A collection of waka poems from the early Heian period. Two volumes. According to the preface, the first volume was completed in 893 (Kanpei 5), and the second volume in 913 (Engi 13). The original form was a collection of waka poems divided into two volumes, mainly consisting of the poems from the "Kanpei Gotoki Kokyu Utaawase" (Kanpei Gotoki Kokyu Utaawase) by Uda Tomomi (887-897), with other poems added, and edited into five parts: spring, summer, autumn, winter, and love (thoughts). The Chinese translations of seven-character quatrains that are added to the left of each poem were originally only a few poems, but were later expanded to reach their current form. It was also called the "Kanke Manyoshu," but there is no conclusive evidence that Sugawara no Michizane himself was involved. Waka poems are written in Manyo-gana (Mana style), which retains the ancient style of kana usage from the early Heian period. It is also a good resource for considering the differences and similarities in the methods of expression between waka and Chinese poetry.
