Around 1575 - 1621 French dramatic poet and economic theorist. Son of a drug wholesaler, he began writing plays at an early age, and attracted attention with his dramatic poems inspired by the Old Testament and ancient historical texts. In 1601, he published the collection Tragedies, including his masterpiece Queen of Scots, which was based on the tragic life of Mary Stuart. In 1605, he caused a duel and went into exile in England, but was pardoned and returned to France in 1611. After returning to France, he left playwriting and started an ironworks business to manufacture cutlery. He also wrote Traité de l'économie politique (1615), in which he reflected on the current state of the kingdom's economy and made suggestions for the future. This book is known as a pioneering work in mercantilist theory. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
