Antoine de Montchrestien

Around 1575 - 1621
French dramatic poet and economic theorist. Son of a drug wholesaler, he began writing plays at an early age, and attracted attention with his dramatic poems inspired by the Old Testament and ancient historical texts. In 1601, he published the collection Tragedies, including his masterpiece Queen of Scots, which was based on the tragic life of Mary Stuart. In 1605, he caused a duel and went into exile in England, but was pardoned and returned to France in 1611. After returning to France, he left playwriting and started an ironworks business to manufacture cutlery. He also wrote Traité de l'économie politique (1615), in which he reflected on the current state of the kingdom's economy and made suggestions for the future. This book is known as a pioneering work in mercantilist theory.

フランスの劇詩人，経済理論家。薬種問屋の子。早くより劇作の道に入り，旧約聖書や古代の史書に想を得た劇詩を発表し注目された。1601年，メアリー･スチュアートの悲劇的生涯を題材とした代表作《スコットランド女王》などを含む作品集《悲劇》を刊行。05年，決闘事件を引き起こしイギリスに亡命したが，11年許されて帰国した。帰国後は劇作を離れ，刃物製造のための製鉄事業を始めるとともに，《政治経済論要綱Traité de l’économie politique》(1615)を著し，王国経済の現状に対する省察と将来への提言を行ったが，この書は重商主義理論の先駆的業績として知られている。
