The lyre is a stringed instrument whose strings are made to sound by the wind. Its name comes from Aiolos, the Greek god of wind. Its origins are legendary, with one story being that Hermes created the instrument after seeing the tendons remaining in a dried turtle's shell making a sound in the wind, and another story is about the mysterious nature of the instrument producing sound spontaneously. The instrument is made up of a funnel-shaped part that collects the wind, connected to a square lyre with many strings stretched across it, and is fixed to a window frame or installed outdoors to wait for the wind. A clear description of the instrument begins in Kircher's Universal Art of Music (1650), but it was mainly used in everyday life in England and Germany in the 18th and 19th centuries.
