…Born in Asheville, North Carolina, she graduated from her local state university in 1920 and then went on to graduate school at Harvard to study playwriting. In 1928, she completed her novel Look Homeward, Angel, and the following year, this autobiographical novel, with its vivid depiction of the life of mountain people and the fresh emotion of the young Eugene Gantt, who yearns for "beyond the mountains," instantly established Woolf as a rising star in the American literary world. She received a Guggenheim scholarship and traveled to Europe in 1930, returning to Japan the following year and living in Brooklyn, where she devoted herself to writing. …
