Japanese: マーチャーシュ[1世](英語表記)Mátyás I
Mátyás I
1440‐90
King of Hungary. Reigned 1458-90. Humanist, also known as M. Corvinus. Son of Janos Hunyadi. Elected king in 1458 with the support of the middle nobility, who opposed the great nobles, he established a standing army and promoted centralization by training bureaucrats, with the advice of the wise minister Janos Vitéz. He attempted to make Hungary a Central European Empire, opposing the power of the Ottoman Turks on the one hand and the Habsburgs and the Polish Jagiellonians on the other (1468-85 campaigns against the Czechs and Austria, and briefly occupied Vienna in 1485).
