[Meaning of management and administration]
The word "management" is used today in relation to the management of various organizations, including companies, government, education, religion, and unions, but it is not clear when it became established in the Japanese language. The 1940 edition of the "Japanese Language Dictionary" defines it as (1) laying out a territory and laying the foundations, and (2) carrying out things with ingenuity. Early examples of the use of (1) and (2) can be found in the "Book of Songs" from the Spring and Autumn period in China, and in Japan, an example of the use of (2) can be found in the "Taiheiki" from the Muromachi period.

　〈経営〉という言葉は今日，企業をはじめ行政，教育，宗教，組合など各種組織の運営にかかわる言葉として使われているが，日本語としていつごろ定着したかは確かではない。《日本国語大辞典》1940年版には，(1)縄張りをして土台をすえいとなみ造ること，(2)工夫をこらして物事をいとなむこと，とされ，中国春秋時代の《詩経》に(1)(2)の早い使用例があり，日本では(2)の使用例が室町時代の《太平記》にみられる。
