A perennial plant of the Cyperaceae family found in tropical Asia, including Madagascar, Australia, and Polynesia. It grows naturally in marshes and wetlands, but is also cultivated in Guangdong Province, China. Numerous thin stalks grow from the rhizome, reaching a height of about 1 to 1.5 m. The stems have many nodes and are circular in cross section, about 5 mm in diameter. A brownish purple flower spike grows at the top of the stem. Seedlings propagated by division are transplanted into flooded rice paddies or shallow swamps for cultivation. Harvesting begins about a year after planting, and can continue for several years.
