...A leading European manufacturer of general photography (photographic film, cameras, etc.). Its predecessors were the German company Agfa, a pioneer in color film technology founded in 1867 (named after the initials of Aktiengesellschaft für Anilinfabrikation (dye factory) and acquired by IG Farben in 1925 and Bayer in 1952), and the Belgian company Gevaert, founded in 1894.

In this situation, IG Farben was born in 1925 through the merger of six major chemical companies (Badisch Aniline und Soda GmbH (the predecessor of BASF), Friedrich Bayer Dyestführer (the predecessor of Bayer), Agfa (the predecessor of Agfa-Gewählt), Weiler-Therme Kamer, Griesheim Elektronen Kamer, and Hoechst Dyestführer (the predecessor of Hoechst)). These six companies, which dominated the German chemical industry, entered into a consortium of interests agreement and had been manufacturing various products jointly since 1916. ...
