It is an evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub or small tree of the family Carthamaceae, growing to a height of 3-8 m (illustration). It is native to tropical America, but has spread to tropical and subtropical regions of the world as a dye plant. The alternate leaves are ovate, 8-24 cm long, 4-16 cm wide, and have a petiole length of 5-12 cm. The flowers are pale pink to white, 4-6 cm in diameter, with 4-5 sepals, 4-7 petals, and numerous stamens. 8-50 flowers form a panicle at the end of the branch.
