[School architecture in Japan]

[The era of standardization]
The period from the promulgation of the Education Act until the 1880s was the infancy of school architecture in Japan. In the early days, schools were built using temple schools or teachers' homes, but in some areas, modern schools with a pseudo-Western style were built by foreign architects. In 1895 (Meiji 28), the Ministry of Education published "School Architecture Drawings, Explanations, and Design Outlines." This was, so to speak, a standard design for school buildings, and it showed ideas and examples of what school architecture should be like in the future.
