Waters - Thomas James Waters

Waters - Thomas James Waters

British architect and engineer. He was an important figure as one of the first people to introduce Western-style architecture to Japan from the end of the Edo period to the early Meiji period, but the details of his career are not known. All that is known is that he arrived in Japan with his wife and his brother, John Albert R. Waters (1846-1902/1903), sometime before 1865 (Keio 1). However, his achievements during Japan's opening up to the world were great, and since his arrival in Japan, he worked on the construction of various Western-style factories for sugar, spinning, and paper, the Osaka Mint building complex, the Takebashi Camp, and the British Embassy. He also planned the Ginza Red Brick District, Japan's first brick-built shopping street, and built a Hoffman-type ring kiln for brick production in Kosuge Village (now Kosuge, Katsushika Ward, Tokyo).
