Title. Eight volumes in total. Written by Ihara Toshiro. Edited and revised by Kawatake Shigetoshi and Yoshida Eiji (Teruji). Completed in May 1963. In 1894, Ihara Toshiro (Ihara Seien) was commissioned by Tsubouchi Shoyo to write a history of Kabuki for the Waseda Bungaku magazine. This was the opportunity for Ihara to decide that the study of theater history would be his life's work, and he began to create a Kabuki chronology based on Sekine Tadamasa's manuscript Theatrical Chronology. He continued to write it throughout his life, and the Edo section ran to 22 volumes, and the Kyoto-Osaka section to 21 volumes. He organized the manuscript and published it with Edo and Kyoto-Osaka contrasted between the top and bottom. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
