Iwaki [Village] - Iwagi

Japanese: 岩城[村] - いわぎ

A village in Ochi County in northern Ehime Prefecture. Population 2,479 (1995). The Geiyo Islands consist of Iwakijima, Akaonejima, and Tsuhajima, both of which are uninhabited. Iwakijima was a key location on the Seto Inland Sea route, and in the late ancient period it was home to a manor belonging to Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine. In the Middle Ages it was known as an island for salt production. During the feudal period it was a maritime post station for those travelling to Edo for alternate attendance, and the town flourished as a port with its headquarters. Shipbuilding-related industries are the main industry, and many people commute to the shipyard on Innoshima. In terms of agriculture and fishing, seaweed farming and other fisheries are carried out, and citrus fruits are grown on the sloping land. There is also a branch of the Prefectural Fruit Tree Experiment Station.

愛媛県北部，越智（おち）郡の村。人口2479(1995)。芸予諸島に属する岩城島，赤穂根島，津波島からなり，赤穂根･津波両島は無人島。岩城島は瀬戸内海交通の要衝の地で，古代末期には石清水八幡宮領の荘園があり，中世は製塩の島として知られた。藩政時代には参勤交代の海上宿駅に当たり，本陣が置かれ港町として栄えた。造船関連工業を基幹産業とし，因島の造船所への通勤者も多い。農漁業では，ノリなどの養殖漁業や傾斜地を利用したかんきつ類の栽培が行われ，県立果樹試験場分場がある。
