Anne Bradstreet

A female poet of colonial America. She grew up in a free and cultural environment, and her father was a Puritan who was a butler to the Earl of Lincoln. She married at the age of 16, and at 18 emigrated from Northampton, England to New England with her father and husband, both of whom became governors of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. She wrote poetry to seek solace in her miserable life on the frontier. Her brother-in-law published her collection of poems, The Tenth Muse Lately in America (1650), in London. Her long poems are narrow-minded and weak, influenced by Spenser, Sidney, Raleigh, and Dubaltus, but her short poems are excellent.

植民地時代のアメリカの女流詩人。自由な文化的環境で育ち、父は清教徒で、リンカーン伯爵の執事であった。16歳で結婚、18歳のおりにイギリス、ノーサンプトンからニューイングランドへ父や夫とともに移住、父も夫もマサチューセッツ湾植民地の総督となる。悲惨な辺境地の生活で慰みを求めて作詩。義理の弟が、作者の詩集『アメリカに最近現れた十番目の詩神』（1650）をロンドンで出版した。作者の長詩はスペンサー、シドニー、ローリー、デュバルタスの影響で、視野が狭く、弱々しいが、短詩は優れている。
