American marten

It is an animal of the Mustelidae family in the Carnivora order of the Mammalia class. It is found in forests and wetlands from central Canada to the northwestern United States. Its body length is 35-40 cm, and its tail length is 17-22 cm. Its beautiful fur is yellowish brown to brown, and its throat and chest are yellow. It is mainly nocturnal, and is good at climbing trees. It eats squirrels, mice, and fruit. It mates in July and August, and gives birth to 1-5 young in April. It makes its nest in a tree hole lined with grass and moss, but it also uses holes on the ground. Its population is decreasing due to overhunting for its fur and deforestation of the coniferous forests in which it lives. Its fur is sometimes called sable, like sable.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱食肉目イタチ科の動物。カナダ中部からアメリカ合衆国北西部の森林や湿地に分布する。体長35～40センチメートル、尾長17～22センチメートル。黄褐色から褐色の美しい毛色で、のどから胸は黄色。主として夜行性で、木登りが巧み。リス、ネズミなどのほか果実も食べる。7～8月に交尾し、4月に1～5子を産む。巣は樹洞に草やコケを敷いてつくるが、地上の穴も利用することがある。毛皮用に乱獲されたことと、生息地である針葉樹林の伐採により減少している。毛皮は、クロテンと同じくセーブルとよばれることもある。
