A veterinary hospital that primarily treats animals kept as pets at home. When various animals are kept as pets, if the animal becomes ill, it will be diagnosed and treated by a veterinarian. Animals that are loved and serve as companions in family life are called pets, and are considered by their owners as members of the family. Only veterinarians are authorized to make medical and surgical diagnoses and provide the respective treatment and care for these animals.

主として家庭で愛玩用に飼われている動物の診療を行う動物病院。各種の動物を愛玩の目的で飼育する際，その動物が病気にかかると，獣医師の診断，治療を受けることになる。家庭生活の中で愛情を傾けられ，伴侶としての役割をもっているような動物はペットと呼ばれ，飼主からは家族の一員として認識されている。　これらの動物について，内科的，外科的な診断を下し，それぞれの処置，加療を行うことを認められているのは，獣医師だけである。
