Fumae (English spelling) floor

Japanese: 踏前 - ふまえ(英語表記)floor
Fumae (English spelling) floor
A mining term referring to the floor of a tunnel or mine. The opposite of the words tenban and kanmuri, which mean ceiling. When ore is excavated from the lower tunnel and reaches the upper tunnel, the mining is stopped to protect the tunnel, and the remaining part is called a "tomae-no-tako" (pillar of ore), and the later mining of this pillar is called "tomae-otoshi" (a process of dropping into a pile of ore). Of the many blast holes drilled to excavate the tunnel, the one close to the floor is sometimes called a "tomae-no-tako" (hole of ore). [Yamaguchi Umetaro]
