Vetch - Vetch (English spelling)

Vetch - Vetch (English spelling)

A general term for many species of the Vicia genus of the legume family (APG classification: Fabaceae), which mainly use the stems and leaves as feed. Common vetch and hairy vetch are the most common. Common vetch/ V. sativa L. is called Saatwicken in German and Ooyahazu-endo (Oo-karasuno-endo) in Japanese. It is a one- or two-year-old plant of the legume family. Native to areas from Europe to Western Asia, it has been cultivated as feed since before the Common Era. Seeds are sown in fields in autumn and harvested in early summer. It has a fresh grass yield of about 2 tons per 10 ares. It is also excellent as green manure.

Hairy vetch ( V. villosa Roth.) is a biennial plant native to Western Asia and the eastern Mediterranean. Its Japanese name is Velvetokusafuji. Its leaves are thinner than those of common vetch, and the stems and leaves are hairy. Its flowers are blue-purple, with about 30 flowers growing on flower stalks emerging from the leaf axils. It grows in poorer soil than common vetch, is more cold-resistant and resistant to summer heat, and blooms a little later. It is cultivated in more extensive areas than common vetch, such as in mountainous areas and pastures.
