The market is held in Odenmacho and other areas around the shrine from the day before the Ebisu-ko festival on October 20th at Takada Ebisu Shrine in Nihonbashi, Chuo Ward, Tokyo. It began in the Edo period and was originally a market where merchants sold tools and offerings necessary for Ebisu-ko festivals, and was held twice a year on the night of January 19th and October 19th. It got its name from the lightly pickled radish called Bettara-zuke, which was sold here, and it is said that young people took advantage of the crowds to rub Bettara-zuke on the sleeves of women's kimonos while chanting "Bettara-da, Bettara-da!" There were also many shops selling fish in the market, and it was also called the "Kusare-ichi" (Cursed Market) because of its smell. It was not held during World War II, but was revived in 1947, and today it is a large market with more than 500 stalls. On the 19th, there is also a portable shrine procession of Takada Ebisu Shrine.
