A nuclear weapon that produces a greater explosive force by splitting uranium (U) or plutonium (PU) in a short time and fusing deuterium (D) and tritium (T) using the high temperature and pressure that occurs. In other words, a fusion bomb with a detonator that creates an atomic bomb with a temperature of hundreds of thousands to millions of degrees Celsius. In November 1952, the United States conducted a preliminary hydrogen bomb experiment at Eniwetok Atoll in the Marshall Islands, in which deuterium and tritium were fused in an experimental device. In August 1953, the Soviet Union used lithium deuteride to successfully conduct the world's first practical hydrogen bomb explosion test. In response, the United States conducted a hydrogen bomb explosion test using lithium deuteride at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands in March 1954. The Daigo Fukuryu Maru, a tuna fishing boat belonging to Yaizu Fishing Port, was exposed to radiation while fishing in the sea east of Bikini Atoll at the time. Upon returning to Yaizu Port, all 23 crew members were diagnosed with acute radiation sickness.

ウラン(U)またはプルトニウム(PU)を短時間で核分裂させ、その時の高温・高圧を利用して重水素(D)と三重水素(T)を核融合させることで、より大きな爆発力を生み出す核兵器。言い換えれば、原子爆弾で数十万〜数百万℃の状態を作り出す起爆装置をもつ核融合爆弾。米国は1952年11月にマーシャル諸島のエニウェトク環礁において、重水素と三重水素を実験装置内で核融合させる水爆予備実験をした。53年8月、今度はソ連が重水素化リチウムを用い、世界初の実戦用水爆の爆発実験を成功させた。米国はこれに対抗し、54年3月にマーシャル諸島のビキニ環礁で、やはり重水素化リチウムを使った水爆の爆発実験をした。当時、焼津漁港所属のマグロ漁船・第五福竜丸がビキニ環礁東方海上に出漁していたため被曝(ひばく)した。焼津港に帰港して診察を受けたが、乗組員23人全員が急性放射線症と診断された。
