Heiyouden - Heiyouden

The name of a Chinese colloquial story-telling novel. Eight volumes, 40 chapters. Written by Feng Dream Long at the end of the Ming Dynasty. It depicts a rebellion that occurred in Beizhou (Hebei Province) during the reign of Emperor Renzong of the Song Dynasty. Like "Water Margin," it became the subject of storytelling in the Yuan Dynasty, and was first compiled by Luo Guanzhong into a 20-chapter novel, "Sansui Pingyaozhuan," which he later revised to unify the content, structure, and style of the novel, creating the current work. Since it is based on historical facts about a rebellion by a secret religious society, the main interest lies in the magic used by the mastermind, Wang Ze, and others. It was introduced to Japan alongside other colloquial novels, and many translations, synopses, and introductions have been made, including that of Kyokutei Bakin, who was an avid reader and wrote the Sansuiki Heiyaoden Kokujihyo.

中国の口語章回(しょうかい)小説の名。八巻、40回。明(みん)末の馮夢龍(ふうぼうりゅう)の作。宋(そう)の仁宗のときに貝(ばい)州（河北省）で起こった反乱を描いたもの。『水滸伝(すいこでん)』と同じく、元代に講談の題材となり、それがまず羅貫中(らかんちゅう)の編作という名のもとに、20回の章回小説『三遂(さんすい)平妖伝』にまとめられ、それを馮夢龍が増訂して内容、構成、文体を統一し、現行の作品にした。基づく史実が宗教的秘密結社による反乱であるところから、首謀者の王則などが用いる妖術がおもしろさの中心となっている。日本でも他の口語小説の輸入と肩を並べて渡来し、曲亭馬琴(ばきん)が愛読して『三遂平妖伝国字評』をつくったのをはじめ、多くの翻訳、梗概(こうがい)訳、紹介がなされている。
