A state in the south-central part of Australia. It has an area of 984,000 km2 and a population of 1.48 million (1996). Its capital is Adelaide. Most of the state is arid, with 98% of the land receiving less than 500 mm of rainfall per year. Most of the population is concentrated in the southeast, with the state capital alone accounting for 70% of the population. In agriculture and livestock, it is known for wheat and wool as well as grape cultivation (in the Barossa region), and the state's wine production accounts for over 60% of the nation's total. In mining, natural gas is important, and is sent by pipeline from the northeast of the state to Port Pirie and Sydney. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
