It can also be read as "Hetsugi". The family name originates from Totsugi-sho, Oita County, Bungo Province (present-day Oita City). The Ogami Totsugi clan had been in the manor since the end of the Heian period, but in the Kamakura period, Totsugi Korezumi handed over his estate to Bungo Shugo Otomo Noriaki (one theory goes that he adopted Noriaki's grandson Shigehide), and the Otomo lineage of the Totsugi clan began with Shigehide. In the Bungo Province Map of Fields, 1285 (8th year of the Koan period), the names of Shigehide's sons Tokichika, Shigeyori, and Yorichika appear in the Totsugi manor, and the family tree also includes the name of Yoshinao, showing that the estate was divided and inherited. The Totsugi clan held estates throughout Bungo, and had hidden influence, with Totsugi clan head Tokichika's son Sadanao and his illegitimate son Shigeyori listed on the Chinzei Council, which was established after the Mongol invasion.
