Pacific Community

Japanese: 太平洋共同体 - たいへいようきょうどうたい（英語表記）Pacific Community

The organization was established in 1947 after the end of World War II by six countries with colonies in the South Pacific - Britain, the United States, France, the Netherlands, Australia, and New Zealand - with the aim of developing the economy and society and improving welfare in those colonies. When it was first established it was called the South Pacific Commission, but in 1997 it was renamed to its current name on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. Since its establishment, as the colonies gained independence and established self-government, island nations have joined one after another as full or associate member states, and their voice has increased year by year, and it has come to function as an organization promoting solidarity in the region.

南太平洋に植民地をもつイギリス，アメリカ，フランス，オランダ，オーストラリア，ニュージーランドの6ヵ国が，第2次大戦終了後の1947年に，植民地の経済･社会開発，福祉向上を目的として創設した機関。創設時は南太平洋委員会South Pacific Commissionと称したが，創設50年を機に97年，現名称に改めた。創設以降の植民地の独立および自治政府樹立に伴い，順次，正･準加盟国として島嶼国も参加し，年ごとに発言権を高めており，地域の連帯化を図るための組織としての機能を果たすようになった。
