...The intellectuals who had formed a radical and revolutionary force within the liberal faction, influenced by the German Krause philosophy, and the working class under their leadership, appeared on the political stage. In the face of this new social class, Generals Juan Prim y Prats (1814-70) and Francisco Serrano y Domínguez (1810-85), who had been central figures in the military uprising and who had established a provisional government after its success, struggled to decide what form of government to establish. The selection of the next king was particularly difficult.
