Vézelay - Vézelay (English spelling)

A small village in the Yonne department in central France, and a pilgrimage site. It is located on a hill south of the Yonne River. Population 492 (1999). It is famous for the monastery's affiliated church, La Madeleine Church (11th-13th century), one of the most Romanesque churches in France. The town originated from a Benedictine monastery founded in 860 that housed the remains of Saint Madeleine, and has been a pilgrimage site since the 11th century. The monastery was abandoned during the Hundred Years' War.

World Heritage Registration

The hill on which La Madeleine Church stands was registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 1979 and again in 2007 as "Vézelay Church and Hill" (World Cultural Heritage).
