The capital of Nghe An Province in central Vietnam. It is located 257 km south of Hanoi, in the center of the alluvial delta of the Ca River. It has a population of 98,700 (2003 estimate). National Highway No. 1 and the Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh Railway line pass through the city. There is a citadel built in 1804, and it has been a strategic military location since ancient times, and was subjected to heavy bombing by the US military during the Vietnam War. It has flourished as an agricultural and commercial center for the surrounding area, but in recent years, sugar and paper manufacturing industries have also been established. Ben Chuy in the east is Vinh's outer port. [Kikuchi Kazumasa] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
