A Malaysian palm fruit tree that usually grows in swampy areas and has no aboveground stem. The leaves are basal, pinnately lobed, large, 4-7 m long. The pinnae are linear lanceolate, 40-70 cm long, and whitish on the underside. The petiole and mid-axis have thorns up to 2.5 cm long. The spadix is dioecious, axillary, and the male spadix is 40-50 cm long and bears red flowers. The female spadix is about 2.5 cm long and bears yellow-green flowers. The fruit is globose or ovoid, often angular, about 5 cm long, brown on the outer surface, and covered with many triangular scales with fine hairs.
