The originator of ninjō-banashi in Edo was Ishii Soshuku II, who was active around the Bunka and Bunsei eras (1804-30), and it was Shiba Shibasō (also known as Shibaya Katsusuke), who started ninjō-banashi in Kamigata around the Kyowa and Bunka eras (1801-18). While Soshuku was a doctor turned rakugo performer, Shibaso was a Joruri and Kabuki playwright, and his long story Abura, based on a Chinese novel, was also dramatized.
