A city in northwestern Algeria, North Africa. It is located in an oasis at an altitude of 748 meters near the border with Morocco. Its former name was Colomb Béchar. It is the capital of the Béchar prefecture. Its population was 131,010 (1998), 236,213 (2008 census). In 1905, it developed as a French military garrison, and a railway was built connecting it to Oran on the Mediterranean Sea, and it became a shipping station for coal, iron ore, copper ore, and magnesium produced nearby. After independence, border conflicts with Morocco continued, and it was an important military base. Industrialization has also progressed, and as a commercial and industrial center, the population from the oasis is flowing in. There is an airport.

北アフリカ、アルジェリア北西部の都市。モロッコとの国境に近い標高748メートルにあるオアシスに位置する。旧称はコロン・べシャールColomb Béchar。べシャール県の県都。人口13万1010(1998)、23万6213(2008センサス)。1905年フランス軍駐屯地となり発展、地中海に面したオランと結ぶ鉄道が敷設され、付近で産出する石炭、鉄鉱、銅鉱、マグネシウムの積出し駅となった。独立後モロッコとの国境紛争が続き、その重要な軍事拠点である。工業化も進み、商工業の中心地として、オアシスからの人口が流入している。空港がある。
