A metal caster, he was born in Shita-ya, Tokyo, as the third son of sculptor Koun Takamura. His elder brother was sculptor and poet Kotaro. He studied under Nobuo Tsuda at the metal casting department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts) and after graduating in 1915 (Taisho 4), he founded the Mukai group in 1926 with the aim of establishing a new style of craft art. His works "Cast Silver Plate," "Diagonal Pattern Flower Cylinder," and "Cast Copper Flower Cylinder" were consecutively selected for special awards at the Teiten Exhibition from 1927 to 1929 (Showa 2 to 4). After that, he served as a judge and director at the Teiten, Bunten, and Nitten Exhibitions, and taught the next generation of artists as a professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (1933-44). In 1935, he founded the Jitsuzai Kogei Bijutsukai (Real Craft Art Association) and worked to establish a new style. In 1950, he became a member of the Japan Art Academy, and in 1964, he was recognized as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property. While his works have traditional shapes, many of them express a modern sensibility, breaking away from the ornamental crafts of the Meiji period. He also studied poetry under the husband and wife duo Yosano Tekkan and Akiko, and published a collection of poems entitled "Rokkoshu."
