Beja tribe - Beja tribe (English spelling)
In Arabic, they are called Bujah. They are a nomadic people who live from Aswan to the Eritrean Plateau between the Red Sea and the Nile and Atbara rivers. They speak the To-Bedawi language, which belongs to the Hamitic languages. Their population is estimated at about 1.7 million. They are said to be the descendants of a people who lived in their current location before 4000 BC. Their physical characteristics include short stature, brown skin, and curly hair, but the inhabitants of the north show signs of mixed Arab, Armenian, and black ancestry. They have been Muslim since the 13th century. They live in a patrilineal society with a kinship organization similar to that of Arabs. They practice polygamy, but parallel cousin marriage is preferred. Boys are circumcised and girls are deciduous.
