A volcanic island in the westernmost part of the Aleut Islands in the U.S. state of Alaska. It is about 48 km long and 13-24 km wide. It was occupied by the Japanese army in 1942 during World War II, but was recaptured by the U.S. Army the following year. The Japanese garrison under Colonel Yasuyo Yamazaki was annihilated.
