Sansom, Sir George Bailey
Born: November 28, 1883, London
[Died] March 8, 1965. Tucson, Arizona. British diplomat and Japanese history researcher. After studying in France and Germany, he joined the British Foreign Office in 1904, and was posted to Japan two years later, serving in Nagasaki, Hakodate, and Tokyo. He returned to Japan and served in the military during World War I, but served as Acting Commercial Attaché at the British Embassy in Japan from 1920 to 1924, and as Commercial Attaché from 1925 to 1940. He published an English translation of Tsurezuregusa (Essays on Idleness) (1911), An Historical Grammar of Japan (28), Japan; A Short Cultural History (31), and others. After World War II, he served as Minister to the United States and British representative to the Allied Far Eastern Commission. He later became Director of the Institute of East Asian Studies at Columbia University and Advising Professor at Stanford University. During this time he published The Western World and Japan (50) and A History of Japan (58-63). In 1935 he was knighted, in 1951 he was appointed visiting member of the Japan Academy, and in 1954 he was awarded an honorary doctorate in law from Columbia University.

In addition to novels such as The Body (1949), The Face of Innocence (51), and A Bed of Roses (54), he also wrote many short stories, and is considered one of the leading contemporary short story writers, alongside A. Wilson.
