A city in Wielkopolskie Voivodeship in central Poland. An industrial city on the Prosna River, about 100 km west of Łódź. One of the oldest cities in Poland, its name Kalisza was already mentioned in Claudius Ptolemy's Geographike hyphegesis in the 2nd century. It was a strategic location on the so-called Amber Road connecting the Roman Empire with the Baltic Sea. It was the capital of the 13th century Duchy of Kalisz. In 1343, the Treaty of Kalisz was signed here between the Kingdom of Poland and the Teutonic Knights. In 1793, it was occupied by Prussia during the Second Partition of Poland. During World War II, it was one of the centers of the anti-German resistance movement, and about 28,000 residents were killed. The most active industry is textiles. Population: 109,498 (2002).
