Biskra - Biskra (English spelling)

An oasis city in northeastern Algeria, North Africa. Located at the southern foot of the Sahara and the Atlas Mountains, it is known as the "Pearl of the Sahara" for its beauty. Population: 170,956 (1998), 563,245 (2008 census). Capital of Biskra Governorate. 150,000 date palm trees are cultivated using underground water and spring water from the Biskra River, and the fruit is known for its delicious taste. After independence, industrialization progressed and the population became concentrated. It is a key transportation hub connecting the Mediterranean coast with the Sahara, and is accessible by air and rail from the capital, Algiers, making it a tourist base for the Sahara Desert.

北アフリカ、アルジェリア北東部にあるオアシス都市。サハラ・アトラス山脈南麓(なんろく)に位置し、その美しさから「サハラの真珠」とよばれる。人口17万0956（1998）、56万3245（2008センサス）。ビスクラ県の県都。ビスクラ川の伏流水と湧水(ゆうすい)で15万本のナツメヤシが栽培され、その実は美味で知られる。独立後、工業化が進められ人口が集中した。地中海岸とサハラを結ぶ交通の要衝で、首都アルジェから空路、鉄道の便もあり、サハラ砂漠の観光基地となっている。
