An oasis city in northeastern Algeria, North Africa. Located at the southern foot of the Sahara and the Atlas Mountains, it is known as the "Pearl of the Sahara" for its beauty. Population: 170,956 (1998), 563,245 (2008 census). Capital of Biskra Governorate. 150,000 date palm trees are cultivated using underground water and spring water from the Biskra River, and the fruit is known for its delicious taste. After independence, industrialization progressed and the population became concentrated. It is a key transportation hub connecting the Mediterranean coast with the Sahara, and is accessible by air and rail from the capital, Algiers, making it a tourist base for the Sahara Desert.
