Pujangga (English spelling)

Japanese: プジャンガ（英語表記）pujangga

They were court poets in the traditional kingdoms of Java, Indonesia, who transmitted the secrets of kingship. Representative examples include Prapanca, who composed the long epic poem Nagarakurtagama during the Majapahit Kingdom, and Yosodipuro I, II, and Longowarsit, who served the successive kings of Mataram. Pujanga praised the king's achievements with his verse poems, and guaranteed the legitimacy of the king and the kingdom by compiling the kingdom's chronicles. He was also the embodiment of traditional wisdom as secrets. However, in the 19th century, when the Mataram Kingdom was divided into four royal families and its powerlessness against the Dutch became clear, and as Dutch Javanese studies conquered the language, literature, and art of Old Java, the lineage of Pujanga came to an end with Longowarsit.
