Antisthenes - Antisthenes (English spelling)

An ancient Greek ascetic philosopher. A student of Socrates, he praised and inherited his teacher's practical simplicity and strength. He taught at Kinosarges in Athens and is said to be the founder of the Cynic school. He is famous for saying, "Madness is better than pleasure." However, he did not reject the pleasure obtained through hard work. He believed that "wealth is in the heart," and considered it virtuous to be selfless and content with oneself. The mythological Hercules was his ideal. He also claimed that "a can only be called a," which is said to have led to the refusal to accept definitions of things and to deny the possibility of falsehood and counterargument.

古代ギリシアの禁欲主義の哲学者。ソクラテスの弟子で、師の質実剛健な実践面を賛美し、これを継承した。アテネのキノサルゲスで教え、キニコス学派の祖といわれている。「快楽よりはむしろ狂気を」ということばが有名。しかし、労苦によって獲得される快楽は否定しない。「富は心のなかにあり」として、無欲にして自ら足れることを徳とした。神話のヘラクレスが彼の理想像であった。彼はまた「aはaとしかいえない」と主張して、ものの定義を認めず、虚偽や反論の可能性をも否定する結果になったといわれる。
