…the ancestors of the Western Slavs. In Latin, they are written as Veneti or Venedi. There are many place names in Europe that have the roots Wen or Win (such as the old name of Vienna, Vindobona, and Venetia in Italy), so it is believed that people with this name lived widely.

The first reliable information about the Slavs can be found in the works of the Roman historians Pliny the Elder and Tacitus, where they appear under the name of the Venedi (Veneti). According to Tacitus' Germania, the Venedi built their homes and settled in the forests and mountains between the settlements of the Peucini (Germanic) and the Fenni (Finnish or Lappian), and carried weapons such as spears and shields, running around swiftly and plundering, and their lifestyle was similar to that of the Germanic people. …
