Touga

Japanese: 東雅 - とうが

A book on etymology. Written by Arai Hakuseki. Published in 1717 (Kyoho 2) and revised in 1718 (Kyoho 4). Published in 1903. The title is based on "Erga" and means "Erga of the East." It divides nouns into 15 categories, first showing the kanji, then adding the katakana reading, and citing ancient texts to interpret the etymology. When interpreting, it emphasizes the importance of time and phonology. Although it contains many far-fetched interpretations, it also makes noteworthy comments, such as one of the first to mention the relationship with Korean, that "kinu" is a Chinese word "kinu" that entered Japanese via Old Korean.

語源書。新井白石著。享保2 (1717) 年成立，同4年改編。刊行は 1903年。書名は『爾雅』に基づき，「東方の爾雅」の意。名詞を 15部門に分け，まず漢字を示し，かたかなの訓をつけ，古書をあげて語源解釈をしている。解釈に際しては，時代性と音韻を重視することを説く。こじつけも多いが，「きぬ」は漢語「絹」が古期朝鮮語を経て日本語に入ったものとするなど，いちはやく朝鮮語との関係に言及した注目すべき意見なども述べている。
