W.Va. is a mining state in the central eastern United States. It joined the Union in 1863, becoming the 35th state. Its area is 62,628 km2, and its population is 1.83 million (1996). Its capital and largest city is Charleston. It is one of the northernmost southern states, and its climate is humid and warm inland. As its nickname "Mountain State" suggests, it is mainly made up of the Appalachian Mountains and the Allegheny Plateau, with small settlements scattered in the valleys where erosion has progressed, and the region as a whole is quite isolated. It was originally part of Virginia, and settlement beyond the Allegheny Plateau began in the late 17th century. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
