A domestic dog that originated in the UK. It is a small breed, standing 25-28cm tall and weighing about 9kg. It originated in western Scotland, and is one of the Highland terriers that descend from a common ancestor with the Scotch terrier, Cairn terrier, and Dandie Dinmont terrier. The undercoat is soft and dense, while the topcoat is hard and bristly, and the coat is solid white, as the breed name suggests. In the past, there was a superstition that white dogs were abhorrent, and so when white dogs were born, they were culled, but it is said that a small number of enthusiasts bred them in secret and passed them down.

原産地がイギリスの家庭犬。体高25～28cm，体重約9kgの小型種。発祥地はスコットランド西部で，スコッチ･テリア，ケアン･テリア，ダンディ･ディンモント･テリアDandie Dinmont terrierなどと共通の祖先から発したハイランド･テリアHighland terriersの一つ。被毛は，下毛は柔らかく密であるが，上毛は硬く剛毛で，毛色は品種名のとおり白一色である。往時白いイヌを忌み嫌う迷信があり，白いイヌが生まれると淘汰されたが，少数の愛好家らによって秘密裏に育種改良され伝えられたともいわれる。
