This is the common name for the 127.3 km JR line between Morioka, Omagari and Akita, with a gauge of 1,435 mm, on which the Komachi Express, one of the so-called mini-shinkansen trains, runs. It is operated by East Japan Railway Company (JR East). In terms of track name, the section between Morioka and Omagari (75.6 km) belongs to the Tazawako Line, and the section between Omagari and Akita (51.7 km) belongs to the Ou Main Line. The Akita Shinkansen was the second line to be converted into a mini-shinkansen after the Yamagata Shinkansen, and in 1990, JR East launched the Akita Mini-Shinkansen Technical Study Project. In January 1992, an agreement was reached between the national government, Akita Prefecture, Iwate Prefecture, and JR East regarding the division of costs, and construction began in March of the same year, with the line opening on March 22, 1997. The Tazawako Line was rebuilt from a gauge of 1,067 mm to 1,435 mm (single track throughout), and conventional trains could no longer run on the line, but local trains are operated with their carriages modified to fit the new gauge. The Ou Main Line section has one parallel single track of 1067mm gauge and one of 1435mm gauge (however, the conventional line between Mineyoshikawa and Jinguji on the Ou Main Line is a triple track section, and the Shinkansen is double tracked on this section, allowing Shinkansen trains to pass each other). The Komachi limited express train, which runs directly between Tokyo and Akita, is coupled with the Hayate limited express train on the Tohoku Shinkansen, and enters the Akita Shinkansen section alone from Morioka. The maximum speed on this section is limited to 130 kilometers per hour, but the Komachi is the fastest train to cover the distance between Tokyo and Akita in 3 hours and 50 minutes.
