It was once one of the largest telecommunications companies in the United States alongside AT&T, but is now a subsidiary of First Data Co., a major electronic commerce service company in the country (established in 1992), and provides domestic and international funds transfer services and (physical) messaging services. Its predecessor was founded in 1856 by Western businessman Hiram Sibley, who merged the numerous telegraph companies that existed at the time. After a series of mergers, it eventually monopolized telegraph services throughout the United States.
