The lake's eastern shoreline is limited to the eastern Andean mountain range (the Apolobamba and Real mountain ranges) that run from northwest to southeast, and has a relatively uninhabited shoreline, while the southwestern shoreline is rugged with many indentations and bays, including old volcanoes. It is divided into two parts by the Tiquina Gulf (1 km wide) near Copacabana, a sacred site for the Indians in the region, and the southern small lake (Winaymarca, about 1,400 km2) is less than 5 m deep. *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "Winaymarca" are listed below.
