Shinzei - Shinzei

Japanese:
Shinzei - Shinzei
A scholar and official in the late Heian period. His real name was Fujiwara Michinori. His father was a first-class kurōdo (the highest ranking kurōdo of the sixth rank), Sanekane. At the age of seven, he was adopted by Takashina Tsunetoshi. He served the retired Emperor Toba closely, and in 1143 was promoted to junior councilor. The following year, he resumed his original surname of Fujiwara and became a monk. His Buddhist name was initially Enku, but he soon changed it to Shinzei. After becoming a monk, he grew closer to the retired emperor and became a central figure among his close vassals. Around 1135, he married Asako, the daughter of Kii no Kami Fujiwara Kanenaga, and Asako became the wet nurse of Emperor Goshirakawa, which allowed him to further increase his influence after his accession to the throne. He consolidated his position as the emperor during the Hōgen Rebellion, and promulgated a new system (the Hōgen New System) that proclaimed the emperor's direct rule. In 1158, when the emperor abdicated to Emperor Nijō and became the retired emperor, the power struggle between the retired emperor and the emperor's close vassals intensified. In 1159, when Minamoto no Yoshitomo and Fujiwara no Nobuyori raised an army, Shinzei tried to flee to Nara, but was discovered on the way and committed suicide. His books include "Honchō Seiki" and "Hossō Rui-rin". → Heiji Rebellion → Related topics Sadayoshi | Shinzei Kogakuzu | Takashina Clan | Suminori | Heiji Monogatari Emaki | Honchō Seiki
