A Parisian art dealer. He started out as a stationery and art supply store, and in 1840, the first Jean Durand (whose wife's surname was Ruel) opened a store as an art dealer dealing mainly in the Barbizon School. In 1865, his son Paul took over the store, and became their financial backbone by purchasing works by unknown Impressionists. With the help of his three sons, Paul played an important role in anticipating trends in the art world of the time, such as holding solo exhibitions of painters from Impressionism to Post-Impressionism at a fairly early stage. It closed in 1974. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
