Kamakura Kagemasa

Japanese: 鎌倉景政 - かまくら・かげまさ

Years of birth: unknown. A powerful samurai of the late Heian period. Son of Kamakura Gonno Kami Kageakira of the Kanmu Heishi clan. Born in Kamakura, Sagami Province (Kanagawa Prefecture). Called Gongoro. Serving under Minamoto no Yoshiie in the Gosannen War (1083-87), he fought bravely with an arrow shot through his right eye, and was angered by his companions trying to pull the arrow out by putting their feet on his face, which is an anecdote that symbolizes the bravery of eastern samurai. During the Choji era (1104-1106), he developed land in Takaza-go, Sagami Province, and donated it to Ise Shrine as Obata Mikuriya. From there, he grew as a local lord, using this as his base. 平安後期の有力武士。桓武平氏の鎌倉権守景成の子。相模国(神奈川県)鎌倉生まれ。権五郎と称す。後三年の役(1083～87)に源義家の下で従軍し,右眼を矢で射られたまま奮戦,傍輩が顔に足をかけて矢を抜こうとするのを恥辱として怒ったという,東国武士の武勇を象徴する逸話を残す。長治年間(1104～06)相模国高座郷の土地を開発,これを伊勢神宮に寄進し大庭御厨とした。以後ここを拠点に在地領主として成長を遂げる。源氏を棟梁とする東国武士団の典型で,鎌倉幕府草創期の有力御家人大庭氏・梶原氏の祖となる。<参考文献>三上左明『大庭御厨の研究』,石井進『鎌倉武士の群像』
